Lockport St Pedestrian Bridge over DuPage River

Hutchison Engineering, Inc. (HEI) was selected by the Village of Plainfield to provide preliminary engineering including preparation of plans, specification and estimates for widening of the IL Rte. 126 (Lockport St.) bridge over the DuPage River to provide a pedestrian crossing. The pedestrian crossing connects the existing shared-use path west of the river to the Village’s Downtown Historic District and is the initial component of the Village’s riverfront development plan. The existing substructure (including abutments and piers) was extended to provide support for the pedestrian sidewalk on the south side of Lockport St. from Countryman Dr. to west of James St. and the construction of a 4-span total length 192’ dual I-beam superstructure with a nominal ten-foot wide and variable reinforced concrete deck with ornamental bridge railing. Also included in this project was the installation of street lighting from Village Center Drive to West Main Street. In addition to standard bridge and roadway engineering tasks, HEI secured all permits; including an IDOT Roadway Permit and assisted Village staff with Public Involvement activities and a successful Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Grant application. Construction of this $1.1 million project was completed in 2014. The project was recognized by the American Public Works Association, Chicago Metro Chapter, Southwest Branch and awarded “Public Works Project of the Year” for 2014 within the funding category of Transportation Projects $5 Million to $25 Million.
