Featured Project
Hutchison Engineering, Inc. (HEI) was selected by the Plainfield Township Highway Department to provide preliminary engineering and construction oversight services for a new bridge on a new alignment carrying Renwick Rd. over the DuPage River. The project undertaken to provide a modern bridge that can meet current geometric policies and provide the desired load carrying capacities. Because the new bridge was constructed on a new alignment it allowed the existing historic bridge crossing to remain in place for pedestrian and bicycle use. The new DuPage River crossing features textured concrete, natural coloring and ornamental lighting. The project included the additional planting of 170 trees to fully compliment the important elements of the historic truss structure and is reflective of the natural river setting. The new crossing is a 5-span, 624’ long steel beam superstructure on concrete substructures. The deck provides 30’ face to face for vehicular travel as well as a separated pedestrian accommodation. Approach roadway reconstruction and realignment was completed and existing safety and design issues addressed; including a new fully protected crossing of the EJ&E Railroad. Construction of this approximately $7.2 million project was completed in 2012. HEI was proud to provide a context sensitive solution in keeping with sound engineering practices and safety standards, while ensuring that the concerns and goals of the community were considered. The project was recognized by the American Public Works Association, Chicago Metro Chapter Southwest Branch and awarded their “Public Works Project of the Year” for 2013 within the funding category of Transportation Projects $5 Million to $25 Million.
