IL Rte 126 and Essington Rd Intersection

Hutchison Engineering Inc. (HEI) was selected by the Village of Plainfield to provide preliminary engineering and construction oversight services for the expansion and signalization of the IL Rte. 126 and Essington Rd. intersection in Plainfield, IL. The intersection of IL Rte. 126 and Essington Rd. is a “Tee” intersection located in the northeast portion of Plainfield. Both IL Rte. 126 and Essington Rd. are very heavily traveled commuter routes to and from the Chicagoland area. The mix of high speed, high volumes and a single leg stop control, created a situation where appropriate gaps in traffic and opportunities for safe movement from Essington Rd. onto IL Rte. 126 were limited. The intersection’s close proximity to the I-55 interchange presented additional design challenges that needed to be addressed. This improvement provided an additional left turn lane and traffic signals, equipped with safe arrival and dynamic dilemma zone protection technology to promote safe travel through the intersection. Construction of this $1 million project was completed in 2011. The project was recognized by the American Public Works Association, Chicago Metro Chapter, Southwest Branch and awarded “Public Works Project of the Year” for 2012 within the funding category of Transportation Projects $5 Million to $25 Million.
